T-Mobile saves on electric power

  • Automatic hibernation of computers in the company reduces costs and helps the environment
  • Almost 250,000 kWh of energy saved
  • T-Mobile's conservation measure will lower carbon dioxide emissions by up to 265tons per year

Prague, 1 April 2008 - In the past few days, the automatic switching-off of computers and monitors during idle periods has been implemented at T-Mobile as a part of the company's sustainable development strategy. The measure applies to the workstations of all T-Mobile employees and will save several dozen tons of fuel a year, therefore significantly lowering carbon dioxide emissions and also saving a considerable amount of money.

According to Jindřich Neubauer of the Facility Services Unit at T-Mobile, the company managed to find an ideal way of saving electricity, in cooperation with T-Systems: "The solution is based on automatically shutting down some desktop components at the time when the PCs are not in use. Monitors are turned off after twenty minutes of idleness while the computers shut down after being idle for sixty minutes. The configured settings will not impede the regular updates of operating systems and applications nor hinder any planned checkups by the antivirus systems." The measure will not apply to standalone notebooks. However, it will affect notebooks that are connected to external monitors; in such cases, the computer and monitor settings will follow the standard configuration.

The input power of a computer has been measured to drop on average by 60 W when the PC hibernates. Workstations will be in hibernation at T-Mobile for eight hours a day on average, including Saturdays and Sundays. "If we take into account those 30% of employees who have already been shutting down their computers after work, the amount of energy saved only this year may reach 225,896 kWh, which constitutes financial savings of more than CZK 500,000," says Jindřich Neubauer, adding: "It can be easily calculated, based on the data specified by the decree of the Ministry of Industry and Trade on energy audits, that the steps taken will result in preventing the significant amount of 264.3 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere this year."

"Respect for the environment and support of sustainable development belong to the fundamental ethical values not only at T-Mobile Czech Republic but at other Deutsche Telekom companies, too. We are very glad that we are successful in maintaining these values," says Radek Havliš, Vice President Corporate Security and Facility Management.

Social responsibility program and environmental protection
Environmentally sound management is a part of T-Mobile's comprehensive program of corporate social responsibility. It includes, for example, the T-Mobile Fund, which is intended to support local initiatives throughout the Czech Republic, a volunteer program for T-Mobile employees, and the jaXmobilem project, which the company has been involved in since 2006. As a part of the jaXmobilem project, annual celebrations of the informal Mobile Etiquette Day are held; this year, the festivities were devoted to the recycling of unused handsets.

In addition to this, T-Mobile also supported the environmentally responsible behavior of its customers recently by conducting a campaign from 7 November 2007 to 31 January 2008 based on offering vouchers for each unused mobile phone that was returned to a T-Mobile shop. The "Recyklístek" vouchers, each with a value of CZK 200 incl. VAT, could be used when purchasing new handsets, Twist sets or accessories at T-Mobile shops. The campaign was an immense success in that it persuaded customers to return 50,554 unused mobile phones, which is 70 times more handsets than were collected in the whole of 2006. The total value of the recycling vouchers distributed among customers was CZK 10,110,800.
