T-MOBILE MAKES WIRETAPPING MORE DIFFICULT

New A5/3 encryption algorithm implemented in T-Mobile’s 2G network
Wiretapping protection in the 2G network is now comparable to that in the 3G and LTE networks

Prague, 12 December 2013 – T-Mobile has implemented a more advanced A5/3 encryption algorithm in its 2G network. This new means of encryption replaces the obsolete A5/1 algorithm, which was broken several years ago. This measure brings enhanced protection of the operator’s customers against wiretapping.

“Wiretapping has been a much discussed topic recently. I’m glad that now that a better encryption algorithm has been implemented, our network supports a high security standard,” says Vladimír Klein, Technology Director at T-Mobile, adding: “Similar encryption is used in the faster 3G and LTE networks.”

The launch in the entire 2G network was preceded by a trial operation on one base station controller (BSC). The A5/3 algorithm was originally scheduled to be implemented in this network much earlier; however, it appeared that certain mobile phones do not support it, even though they were supposed to. These terminal devices include, in particular, the CPA Halo 6, which is intended primarily for senior citizens – this device will therefore continue to use the previous encryption algorithm, as will a number of other, mostly older devices, which function only  with the A5/1 algorithm.

The A5/3 encryption algorithm has also been implemented by T-Mobile’s sister companies in Macedonia, Montenegro and Poland. The parent company, Deutsche Telekom, is now putting this algorithm in place in Germany; the implementation is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.
