Prague, 24 March 2010 - The fourth-annual Earth Hour will take place this Saturday, 27 March from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time. This year, T-Mobile will also join this global event, which aims to raise awareness of climate change, by turning off lights inside and outside its headquarters building in Prague's Roztyly district and both regional buildings in Hradec Králové and Louny.
"We understand environmental protection as a series of related and mutually reinforcing steps. And it is not only about T-Mobile itself. We have also approached a number of companies, authorities and organizations with whom we have long been cooperating, asking them to support Earth Hour," says Jitka Chocová, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at T-Mobile, adding: "The colour green will mark the whole year for T-Mobile. Other environment-related activities will be presented in April in conjunction with the traditional Mobile Etiquette Day and they will also continue in the upcoming months."
T-Mobile will support Earth Hour by:
T-Mobile proclaimed its responsibility to the environment as early as in 2005. Since then, it has taken a number of large and small steps aimed at mitigating impacts on the environment. These include, for example, upgrade of the 2G network leading to 45% reduction in energy consumption, introduction of the "green" ISO 14001 standard, waste sorting in all buildings, automatic switching-off of PCs at the end of working hours, installation of motion sensors and water-saving mixer taps.
T-Mobile offers to its customers only ecological bags, free recycling of used handsets and electronic invoices instead of printed ones. T-Mobile also takes ecological aspects into consideration when selecting its suppliers.
Earth Hour is organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It takes place on the last Saturday in March when homes and businesses switch off lights and electric appliances for one hour. The event is intended to increase awareness of global warming. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Australia and became a global event one year later. This year's Earth Hour will take place around the planet at 8:30 p.m. local time.
Earth Hour 2010 also has a Czech site on Facebook; its global site has roughly 900,000 fans. For a video showing the highlights of previous Earth Hours, including turning off the lights on the Eiffel Tower and the pyramids at Giza, click here.
