T-Mobile: FIFA World Cup news was a hit in June

  • 12,000 customers made use of SMS, MMS and video MMS news packages
  • Football fans received 200,000 messages during the championship
  • The number of users of videostreaming more than doubled

Prague, 14 July 2006 - Even though the Czech national team was eliminated from the World Cup in the basic group stage, football fans did not renounce the championship for this reason. Even after the early exit of the Czech team, they made extensive use of MMS and SMS packages which were prepared by T-Mobile, the general partner of the Czech national team and the official mobile operator of the World Cup. The number of users of individual services was in the tens of thousands.

Football fans could choose from a number of special SMS, MMS and video MMS news packages, the WAP t-zones section devoted to the World Cup, and various Java games, wallpapers, melodies and screen savers with World Cup themes.

Significant interest was recorded in the case of on-line information about the World Cup. One of the news packages, focused on the Czech team, was ordered by more than 12,000 users. The number of messages sent to subscribers' mobile phones reached the 200,000 mark during the championship.

However, football fans did not rely only on text or illustrated news. Favorite sources of information also included the t-zones WAP portal which offered a special section devoted to the 2006 World Cup. More than 33,000 customers thus looked up information on the latest results, opinions provided by players and their coaches, behind-the-scenes information, etc. For our football fans, the highlights of the championship were naturally the Czech team's matches and the semifinals and finals, when the football t-zones section was visited daily by approx. 3,000 fans.

Java games also proved that football is the No. 1 sport for the Czechs. In June, more than 5,000 users downloaded one of the three games with a football theme on their mobiles.

Exclusive videos of all 64 World Cup matches have also met with a great response. These videos were available free of charge. The number of users of the videozona service (videostreaming) more than doubled during the World Cup. The total number of downloaded videos which were available at videozona, whether football or music, exceeded the 60,000 mark. This success only proves the customers' interest in the new generation of video services which are intensively being developed by T-Mobile.
