Eighty-two new LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) base stations built in Prague
Indoor coverage by the existing LTE network improved and capacity increased
LTE-A to be available to half of Prague’s population by the end of April
T-Mobile has built 82 new LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) base stations in Prague, thus expanding its coverage with this technology to one quarter of the city’s population. It has also significantly improved indoor coverage in the newly covered territory and increased the capacity of the existing LTE network, which has covered the entire area of Prague since 1 October 2014. The operator is planning to double the percentage of Prague’s population covered with LTE-A by the end of April.
“We want to offer LTE of supreme quality to our customers in terms of outdoor and indoor coverage, whose parameters are on par with the latest world standards,” says Vladimír Klein, T-Mobile’s Technology Director, adding: “By newly assigning the 800 MHz band for LTE-Advanced coverage, we are improving the quality of the existing LTE network in all those parameters.”
The operator’s current LTE-A coverage of the Czech capital corresponds to approx. 25% of the city’s population and 12% of its territory. At the end of April, the coverage will have been expanded to 50% of Prague’s population and 33% of its territory. Additionally, LTE-A signal has also been available since June 2014 in Mladá Boleslav, where T-Mobile was the first operator in the Czech Republic to launch such technology.
LTE-A is based on the aggregation of two bands (i.e. the carrier aggregation function). The eighty-two new base stations in Prague use the 800 MHz band (with the 10 MHz bandwidth) and 1800 MHz band (with the 15 MHz bandwidth). When combined, these bands allow maximum download and upload speeds of 187.5 Mbps and 37.5 Mbps, respectively.
T-Mobile launched LTE-A in the Czech capital last autumn in three of its districts – Černý Most, Horní Počernice and Roztyly. To do so, the operator combined the 10 and 20 MHz bandwidths, which offer theoretical maximum download and upload speeds of 225 Mbps and 50 Mbps, respectively.
T-Mobile currently offers two LTE-A-enabled handsets: the Samsung GALAXY Alpha and the Samsung GALAXY Note 4. However, the operator’s portfolio will soon be expanded to include other devices supporting this technology.
