The operator has launched a complete testing system based on the GSMA standard
T-Mobile is one of the first operators in Europe to have remotely activated an eSIM
T-Mobile’s partners in the project are Samsung and Oberthur Technologies
T-Mobile is getting ready for the introduction of embedded SIM cards (eSIM): in cooperation with its partners, it has begun testing a complete system based on the GSMA standard within which it succeeded in remotely activating the first eSIM. T-Mobile expects that the first devices supporting embedded SIM cards will be introduced to the market during this year.
“At the end of 2016 we announced that we would begin testing a system supporting devices equipped with eSIM cards in the first quarter of this year, which we have done,” says Martina Králová, Director of New Business Development at T-Mobile, adding: “We are very happy that we are one of the first operators in Europe and perhaps in the world that has succeeded in completing this important step within the new standard – activation of the first embedded SIM card.”
At the beginning of this year, the operator launched the first complete testing system based on the GSMA standard, Remote SIM Provisioning Phase 2, which applies to all types of eSIM devices for standard users. One of T-Mobile’s main partners in this project is Samsung – the system is tested on tablets manufactured by this company, which have adjusted firmware that makes it possible to work with eSIM cards. The other partner is Oberthur Technologies, which provided chips enabling activation of embedded SIM cards and eSIM profiles (which are a sort of digital version of SIM cards).
The system is based on a joint platform operated by the Deutsche Telekom Group, to which T-Mobile’s local systems and interfaces developed by the operator and enabling remote manipulation of embedded cards and testing of the operation of the entire chain are connected.
The introduction of eSIM cards goes hand in hand with the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), as it will enable easy activation, administration and control of multiple IoT devices, such as fitness trackers, smart watches, utility meters and smart cars.
