Smart devices at T-Mobile: development and trends

  • The percentage of smartphones sold has increased six-fold in the past five years
  • Forty-three LTE-enabled handsets in the operator’s portfolio
  • The HTC M9 available exclusively from T-Mobile in April
  • The Samsung S6at a CZK 3,898 discount with the first 300 contract extensions

T-Mobile has extracted from its databases interesting figures regarding the development of the share of smart devices in total sales. In the past five years, the share of smartphones in total sales has seen a six-fold increase (from 12% to 76%), with Android being the dominant operating system. Sales of tablets have naturally grown dramatically due to their dynamic development – the fifteen-fold increase in the past two years speaks for itself. The worldwide success of tablets was undoubtedly triggered by Apple’s iPad, though the massive increase in the number of tablets sold by T-Mobile is largely attributable to affordable Prestigio products. According to the operator’s records, customers’ main requirements when purchasing a tablet are (in the descending order) attractive design, affordability, quality and good parameters.

Penetration of smart devices supporting the fastest data access via LTE is now 7% in the operator’s network. When compared with the previous year, sales of these devices through T-Mobile increased by 49%, which is primarily attributable to their affordability. Given the approaching launch of VoLTE into commercial operation, the operator will be putting even greater emphasis on this area. LTE-enabled devices now account for a larger part of the broad portfolio of devices offered by T-Mobile: in February 2015, 43 out the total 63 available handsets supported LTE.

Premium new products on offer in spring

One of the biggest hits of this spring – the HTC One M9 – will be available through exclusive official distribution from T-Mobile in April. The device can be purchased on instalment against an advance payment of CZK 1 (and then 23 monthly instalments of CZK 850); the basic price is CZK 19,999.

Other new premium products are the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, advance sales of which will be launched via the e-shop on 14 April, followed by sales at T-Mobile shops beginning on on 17 April. Customers will have an opportunity to purchase the first 300 units of the 32 GB (white/black) variant of the S6 at a discount of CZK 3,898, i.e. for CZK 16,101 when extending their contract. The basic price is CZK 19,999.

T-Mobile is also looking ahead to spring and summer, when active holidaymakers will be out in force. The operator has prepared an attractive offer of heavy-duty handsets for use with outdoor activities like mountain hiking, cycling and water sports.
