Paegas contribution to UNICEF, the UN Children's Fund, part of one of world's largest charitable drives, organized by the Association of GSM Operators
On Friday, December 18, 1998, RadioMobil presented Jiřina Jirásková, the ambassador of the Czech Committee for UNICEF (the UN Children's Fund) with a financial contribution of half a million crowns. The funds will be used to purchase dialysis units for the 1st Children's Clinic at the Motol Faculty Hospital. The donation is RadioMobil's contribution to one of UNICEF's largest charitable activities, organized by the Association of GSM MoU, which unites operators of GSM mobile networks around the world.
"There are three children's dialysis centers in the Czech Republic - in Prague, Brno and Ostrave," explained MUDr. Jan Janda, CSc., head of staff at the Motol Faculty Hospital's 1st Children's Clinic. "The Prague clinic has by far the most cases of children with kidney disorders, but its capacity and technical capabilities as far as equipment goes don't come close to corresponding to that. The modernization of the dialysis units is essential if we're going to provide children with proper care, and the amount donated by RadioMobil will go a long way toward helping us," he added.
"Over the past year, RadioMobil has donated several million crowns to hospitals and charitable causes," said company spokeswoman Tereza Kakosová. "The half-million crown contribution to the dialysis center at Motol is the high point of our charitable activities for 1998."
RadioMobil's contribution to the Motol hospital, made through the United Nations Children's Fund, will also help support a large-scale charity drive organized by the Association of GSM MoU, which unites mobile network operators from around the world. The association will contribute more than 3 million USD to the international Children's Fund. "UNICEF has helped save millions of children's lives since its inception. The Children's Fund is sponsored by the governments of developed countries around the world and receives further support from benefactor contributions. We feel a moral obligation to help other kids in need through the activities of the organization," said Kakosová.
UNICEF was created on December 11, 1946, to help children whose lives and health were threatened by war. It's full name, the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, or UNICEF, attests to this. The fund chose to keep the name despite the fact that the scope of its activities has expanded beyond crisis situations over the years. In the 1950s and 70s, UNICEF organized projects aimed at improving primary health care and hygiene.
