Prague, 1 January 2011 – The progress of mobile history continues. On New Year’s Eve and during the first hours of 2011 people used mobile telephones less than in the previous years. Although total network traffic increased by approximately 5.1% compared to 2009, the number of calls – the most popular way of expressing New Year’s wishes – fell by 9.15% to 22.1 million. The number of SMS processed by the SMS centre was also lower compared to previous years: 15.9 million (a decrease of 5.07%). MMS messages were the only exception, with more than 197,000 sent through the network, which is a 20% increase compared to the previous year.
The trend of telephone calls dominating the New Year’s Eve and the first minutes of the New Year continued this year. The total number of incoming and outgoing calls amounted to nearly 22.1 million – a decrease of 9.15% – out of which 12.2 million calls were made by T-Mobile customers. As usual, the heaviest voice traffic was recorded within the first hour after midnight, with nearly 3 million calls. The busiest time period was the first fifteen minutes of the New Year, when over 1.1 million calls were made.
In comparison with last year, the number of sent text messages dropped slightly, by 5.1%. The T-Mobile SMS centre processed nearly 15.9 million SMS sent via mobile handsets as well as via various external applications. Customers sent 12.8 million New Year’s wishes from their mobile handsets. SMS users were most active from 11:45 p.m. to 12:45 a.m., with 1.8 million text messages processed by the SMS centre. Between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., over half a million of text messages with New Year’s wishes were sent.
The only category which recorded a significant increase in use was multimedia messages. Whereas in 2009 over 164,000 messages (sent from mobile handsets, external applications and the internet) were processed by the MMS centre, this year the total number increased by almost 20%, exceeding thus 197,000. The heaviest traffic was surprisingly recorded between 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., when over 18,000 MMS were sent. The MMS centre processed nearly 5,000 multimedia messages between 6:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
