Concerning Renumbering of Phone Stations

Announcement of Mobile Operators Concerning Renumbering of Phone Stations

Prague, 5 September 2002 â?" As the Czech Bureau of Telecommunication decided, a complex renumbering process of all present phone stations will take place during the night from 21 to 22 September 2002 in the whole Czech Republic. In connection therewith, a number of changes will be made. In spite of the fact that the changes will only marginally affect the mobile operators, we would like to inform you of them. All present mobile phone numbers will remain unchanged, only the first zero of the prefix will be cancelled â?" instead of dialling 0602, 0603 and 0608, the users will dial only 602, 603 and 608. All mobile prefixes will remain thus changed (i.e. without the first zero) at least for another eight years.

Renumbering will result in all phone numbers being the same length. The national format of mobile and fixed network phone numbers will consist of 9 numbers as of 22 September. Customers will stop using the prefix â?ś0â?ť when calling mobile networks. On the other hand, the international format of mobile phone numbers will remain unchanged (i.e. the format with the prefix +420).

Although the majority of Czech citizens will be affected by renumbering, early preparation may reduce its impacts.

At present, we recommend you:

  •  To save new mobile phone numbers into your phone directory in the international format, i.e. with the prefix +420. Such numbers will not be affected by renumbering.
  • To check your phone directory and to transcribe all mobile phone numbers into the international format.
  • In case you set up the number of your SMS centre, Internet and WAP access point by yourselves, check in the menu of your phone whether the phone number is in the international format (unless you changed the set-up made by your operator, the number is saved in the international format, which will not be changed).

After renumbering:

  • Once again check all phone numbers in your phone directories and change numbers of fixed lines. Information concerning the above-mentioned changes and support from your mobile operator may be found, for example, on the web sites of your mobile operator.
