Christmas Eve in the TMobile network

  • Fewer calls but longer calling
  • Huge rise in the number of multimedia messages
  • Traffic peaked at around noon

Prague, 25 December 2007 - The mobile phone remains a favorite communication tool even on holidays, which is evident in this year's statistics of the T-Mobile network's performance during Christmas. When compared to the previous years, Christmas Eve seems to have taken on a more intimate character where mobile telephony is concerned: The traffic volume has remained more or less the same, or even weakened with regard to certain indicators. Peak traffic has also tended to move into the morning hours, leaving the afternoon and the evening only for callers' loved ones. While the total number of calls on Christmas Eve dropped slightly to about 14.8 million, the SMS message remains the favorite way of wishing family and friends a Merry Christmas: T-Mobile customers sent about 26.9 million text messages, a 2.2% increase over the same period last year. However, the number of sent MMS messages rose much more markedly: by an astonishing 30%.

T-Mobile customers made nearly 14.8 million calls on Christmas Eve, which is a slight decrease of 2.19% compared to the same day last year. However, the average length of calls increased by almost 7%. Like the year before, the heaviest voice traffic was registered between 10:30 and 11:30 when about 1.3 million calls were made. Another peak in the T-Mobile network traffic was registered at about 9 p.m.

The number of sent SMS rose only slightly, by 2.2%. In total, customers sent more than 26.9 million text messages from their mobiles. The busiest hour for text messaging this year was between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., when nearly 2.8 million text messages were sent, while the busiest quarter of an hour was the period between 11:30 and 11:45 when more than 696,000 text messages were sent.

Multimedia messages experienced the biggest growth this year: While in 2006 nearly 136,000 messages were processed by the MMS centre on Christmas Eve (sent from mobile phones, external applications or over the internet), this year more than 184,000 such messages were sent, which constitutes an increase of 25.6%. Customers sent more than 118,000 multimedia messages directly from their handsets, which was 30% more than last year. Quite surprisingly this year, the peak in MMS traffic occurred between 11:30 and 12:30 instead of the usual evening hours after presents are unwrapped.
