Autonomous robots drive in the Jihlava Hospital thanks to T-Mobile's 5G network

The Jihlava Hospital is the first in the Czech Republic to put into operation six autonomous robots, which, thanks to the connection via the 5G network, will speed up operations and relieve the work of staff. Four of them independently deliver food through underground corridors, publicly accessible areas, to the end wards to patients. Other robots are used by the hospital for cleaning. The system is also ready for future use in transporting medical supplies throughout the premises.

The robots operate thanks to an ultra-fast and reliable 5G network that ensures safe operation and precise control in a demanding hospital environment. "The introduction of autonomous robots is a significant step towards the modernization of the hospital. Thanks to this, we will streamline operations, relieve employees and acquire technologies that do not yet work anywhere else in the Czech healthcare system. We are proud that we can operate such a unique system in Jihlava," explains Ing. Alexander Filip, Director of the Jihlava Hospital.

Logistics robots are already in full operation, transporting transport cabinets with food either directly on top of each other or in the pulling mode of a connected train. Fully autonomous washing robots are also part of the solution. Thanks to the infrastructure and the robots deployed, a unique, fully automated and comprehensive operating system has been created at the Jihlava Hospital, which increases efficiency and ensures the self-sufficiency of logistics.

The technology of autonomous mobile robots is provided for the operation of the hospital by the general contractor of the project, ServisControl. The project is financed by the European Union, which is part of the National Recovery Plan and is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Czech Republic. "The whole process of obtaining European subsidies is very complex and demanding. It includes, for example, meeting the highest safety standards that the supplied technologies must meet. In the Czech Republic, we are a professional developer and manufacturer of automatically guided and autonomous trucks," said Ing. Filip Pospíšil, Sales and Technical Director of ServisControl.

The partner in the construction of the 5G network is T-Mobile, which participates in the implementation as a supplier of the so-called hybrid 5G network. It combines the features of a public mobile network, such as wide coverage, but also offers a special dedicated part of the network that is completely separated and protected for the specific needs of a particular operation. "This is crucial for autonomous robots because they require fast and reliable real-time communication in order to work safely and efficiently without interruption. Thanks to it, their complete communication with all infrastructure, including elevators, door openings and traffic lights – with minimal response and high reliability is ensured," says Ing. Jakub Kopecký, Tribe Lead for Industry 4.0 at T-Mobile.

The implementation also included the modernization of the elevator in cooperation with the company VÝTAHY VANĚRKA and also the modification of the automatically opening doors by Raccoon. All this infrastructure was then integrated into the control system of ServisControl. The total investment in the technology is CZK 19,713,000 excluding VAT.
